In and Around Kolaghat

Deulti House of Sharat Chandra Chattopadhyay

Deulti is an otherwise nondescript village on National Highway 6 in West Bengal’s Howrah district. What makes it unique, however, is its association with Bengal’s iconic storyteller, Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay, who is quite possibly the most widely read, translated, and adapted Indian author of all time and called it home for 12 years from 1923.

Strictly speaking, ‘Sarat Kuthi’, as the house is known, is located in the small village of Samta adjoining Deulti, which Sarat Chandra himself renamed Samtaber after purchasing the plot of land in 1919.

The Rupnarayan River lies just a stone’s throw from the house, though during Sarat Chandra’s time, it flowed even closer. As you stroll through the building, you will find Burma teak furniture, Sarat Chandra’s writing desk, a Japanese clock, his hookah, and bookshelves, all preserved with great care.

Haldia

Haldia is an industrial town that offers several attractions for tourists, including the scenic Haldia Riverside Park, the Kukrahati Mangrove Forest, and the beautiful Gopaljew Temple.

Mahishadal Rajbari

The history of Mahishadal Raj Bari dates back to the 16th century, when the present-day place “Geokhali” was known as “Jibonkhali”. During this time, Akbar was reigning over India, and Mahishadal Raj Bari was founded by Janardhan Upadhya, a high-ranking official in the emperor’s army. The lineage then passed through Raja Duryodhan Upadhya, Raja Ramsharan Upadhya, Raja Rajaram Upadhya, Raja Shukhlal Upadhya, and Raja Anadalal Upadhya.

Following Raja Anadalal Upadhya’s death, his wife Rani Janaki Devi ruled the Mahishadal estate from 1770 to 1804. She commissioned several temples, including the Madan Gopal Jew Temple, Ram Jew Temple, Dadhibaman Jew Temple, and the Janakinath Temple at Nandigram. The Madan Gopal Temple, established in 1774, became a focal point of the region, and the Rath Yatra that began in 1776 continues to be one of Bengal’s most celebrated festivals alongside the traditional Durga Puja at Mahishadal Raj Bari.
